When E.I du Pont founded the DuPont company there were two themes that are as important today as they were 200 years ago.
The first is the importance of chemistry and the need to manage all activities associated with chemistry in a rigorous, scientific manner.
The second is the focus on safety and how a good safety program supports clear instructions to employees – “workers must wear shoes without nails to avoid sparks” with personal oversight by the highest levels of management – du Pont built “his own residence on a hill just a few hundred yards away from the machinery that was making the gunpowder”.
Approached in this way du Pont could responsibly unleash the power of the chemicals his company was working with.
